When l went to start my 91 Civic it would not shift from the Park position to any of the other gears.l did this with my foot on the brake like l always do but nothing happened.My first thought was the brake light switch underneath the pedal, so l replaced it but it still does not shift.Is there a fuse under the hood that l need to check?Help please.
Thanks for all the tips and suggestions.It turns out that after installing a new brake light switch, l discovered a blown 20A fuse under the hood in another fuse compartment next to the battery.l also replaced all of the brake light bulbs and everything works just fine now.

there is the lock on the shifter and it unlocks when you press the brake . sometimes they go bad or if you spill something like coke the sugar can make the switch gummy and it will not release.

There is a brake light fuse-- Do your brake lights work? There is usually a little plastic cover on the console right next to the shifter that you can pop out with a small screw driver. Under it is a manual shift lock over-ride button that you can push and should unlock the shifter. Can you manually unlock the shifter?

Its probably in the shifter safety interlock .If you're not mechanically inclined you will be in over your head trying to repair it yourself.
