Im thinking about going to college in the snow and trying to figure out if l should start looking for a subaru or if my car will get me through a winter. The car is all stock at the moment. If l keep t is there anytype of change to the car that would help me out?

Specifically Fort Collins, Colorado
Oh, and l will be buying tires within the next couple months because it will need them.

yeaaa honda accord.my accord.2007..fully upgraded.hasnt let me down in the winter so far.amazing car.winter tires will do the job.if yur ever stuk in snow,,,dusnt matter wheteher you have a 4x4 a RWD or FWD.or XWD.dusnt matter at all.all cars have a P,R,D,3,2,1..stuk in snow?.put it into 1 and drive!!! this puts more rpm.and WILL egt you out.still stuk?..reverse..back into 1 and accelerate..

Are you just saying 4WD is useless because you have an Accord !?

4WD prevents skidding and will never get you stuck in snow (or at least snowy roads where you're supposed to drive) if you handle it right.

And btw what are you talking about ? First gear and higher rpm ?
These are exactly the things that will make your tired dig themselves a hole !

Best trick is to reverse without even trying to get out on D if you get stuck.

just keep the car in a mid-speed never really ever accelerate to quick. take your time.and also do not hit your brakes when you are close to where you need to stop. just slow down then hit the brake

Funny u should ask this because l have a Subaru Forester & a Honda Civic SI. Honestly, the AWD does not do jack vs FWD. The only good thing about a forester is the larger ground clearance. l take my Civic out in the snow before l do the soob because it handles much better. Less fishtailing & stops much faster. Of course, if it snows more than 12'' l have to take the Subaru.

Case n point, if you're expecting to be driving in blizzards all the time where u may be bottoming out a civic, then go for a higher clearance vehicle, but dont buy an AWD subaru thinking it is going to perform a ton better than FWD.

If u plan on using the civic, definitely consider true winter tires. l run Blizzak's. But understand ur car will handle like crap in the dry plow conditions. It is a tradeoff. Dont bother with the performance winter tires like the Blizzak LM-25's. They're no better than a good set of allseasons.

A FWD is the middle ground between awd/4x4 being the best and RWD being the worst. Should you get a Subaru? Well, that depends on how deep the snow gets. l will tell you a story. l almost got stuck in snow a foot deep with black ice underneath. My trusty Subaru only had traction on ONE wheel, the rear right. And it got me out.

Get yourself some good tires and you will be fine.

This depends on numerous factors but AWD is generally always much better than FWD in the snow for traction but wo not help u on corners & does not improve braking.

l have owned many FWD & 4WD Honda cars as well as a Toyota Camry & Subarus with AWD. Personally, l do not like Subarus. I'd look for something else especially if u plan on keeping the car after it has over 150,000 miles. The FWD Accord may be fine, but l would put 4 snow tires on it preferably Blizzaks.

l presently live in NE PA in the Pocono mountains & l can tell u that the roads here tend to be much slicker when it snows than the roads in Northern Vermont where l spent 6 winters. l think it has a lot to do with the climate. It is warmer here than in Vermont. In Vermont the climate is colder & dryer which made the snow less slippery. Probably the road maintenance has something to do with it as well. l never spent a winter in Colorado but l would expect it to be more like Vermont than Pennsylvania. Put on 4 Blizzaks & carry a pair of tire cables for emergency use & go for it. Make sure u know how to drive in the snow. l am one of those idiots that does not slow down in snow storms [at least not much] but l am careful. l do slow down for curves & when there r trees or ditches or banks that l do not want to rendezvous with along the road. But on the straight-a-ways u will see me passing most other cars on the road. l am nearly 62 years old & l drive at least 25,000 miles a year since l was 17. l have only gone off the road 2 or 3 times in a snow storm in all those years that l can remember & only once did that result in damage to the car & at the time l was going only 35 in a 50mph zone! The car l was driving has a lot of oversteer & needed snow tires on the back & weight in the trunk to keep in on the road. Keep the car moving & do not spin the tires. Go slow on the curves & down hills. Put it in lower gear going down hill so u do not have to use the brakes so much. If conditions r really bad go real slow & keep close to the right side of the road especially going downhill that way if u start to slide toward the snow bank on the right u wo not hit it with such force that u get stuck in it. Carry a shovel & a bucket of salt or sand & salt mixed. Do not drive like me. At least not until u feel confident.

BTW A FWD car with a 6 cylinder engine is much better in the snow than a Honda Accord with a 4 cylinder. Because the 6 cylinder puts much more weight over the drive wheels. Remember when u r going uphill & u need the most traction to keep moving, the weight shifts more to the rear of the car, the downhill end. This does not help ur traction. l have seen the time when l could back up a hill that l could not go up in a forward gear for this reason.
