l have a 2005 Honda Civic.l travel on the interstate alot, commuting to work.I am beginning to hear a whine that sounds like it is coming from the front driver is side wheel (when the car gets up over 40-50 mph).The sound resembles the sound of a motorcycle.I've taken it up to 60 mph, shut the car off, and l still hear the whine.I've read some posts online that said that the noise should be obvious when making a right or left turn due to the stress put on the bearing at those times, but l tried it and did not notice a change.l know that the bearings are not that expensive and was considering changing them out.Any tips or tricks for wheel bearing removal for the novice?
l did not mention that my suspition is a bad wheel bearing.The car also has 140k miles on it (long commute to Orlando for work).

Yes thats ur bearing going. no u cant do it urself. the hub is a sealed unit. usually requiring a slide hammer to remove the hub. a air hammer an jaw pullers to remove the old bearin races from hub an spindle, and bearin race driver to install the new one

If it does not sound like grinding metal or clanging metal but rapidly flopping rubber like a motorcycle, then u should inspect ur outer axle boots.

Park ur car & turn ur front wheel all the way to the right. Then look inside ur wheel well & inspect the rubber boots for ur CV joints along the axle rod behind the wheel. If u notice any tears or shiny grease splattered around the area, then u need to replace ur outer CV boots.

The CV boot looks like a black rubber plunger that isolates grease & provides lubrication for ur CV axle joints. When this rubber boots tears, it will slowly allow grease to escape, exposing ur CV joints, & the tear will expand producing odd rubber knocking or flopping sounds.

A new CV quick boot kit can cost u just $20 from ur local auto parts store.
