How long will a honda civic hybrid run off the battery and how long off of gas

The hybrid is not an 'either/or' technology--they both compliment each other & r used separately & jointly depending on demand for power.

the electric motor is typically used to accelerate the car from 0 to 35 mph. the 3 cylinder gas engine is typically used at speeds over 35. the electric motor will 'kick in' over 35 mph when there is a need for more power.

off of the gas engine alone it will run as long as u have gas in the tank. it wo not just run off the battery alone as the gas engine will kick in to recharge the batteries if the charging from the regenerative braking is not enough to keep the batteries up. the control system for the engine & electric motor car wo not allow the batteries to run down because of the chance of damage to the batteries from deep discharge. Batteries r very expensive to replace.

The answer by ''Honda Guy'' is pretty good, but l want to clarify a couple of things.

The car uses the gasoline engine almost all the time u have ur foot on the accelerator, & it usually only uses the electric engine when u r accelerating (regardless of speed) or going up a hill.

Also, the current hybrid model has a four cylinder engine, not a three cylinder engine. Given that ''Honda Guy'' is one of the best sources on Hondas, l assume some older models probably do have three cylinder engines.

The primary fuel savings come from using a smaller, more efficient, gasoline engine - not from running on the electric engine by itself.
