1998 honda civic ex. d16y8. standard transmission. 180,000 miles.

there is a weird distinct noise at higher rpms. when l shift it goes away, but on the following gear the noise comes back at high rpms.... could it be the tranny? l also read that it could be my head going...
has any one had this before?
its hard to describe....
1st gear sounds normal, regular acceleration sound, then when it gets to a high rpm, about 3500, its distinctly different.
instead of rrrrrrrrrrrrr it goes grgrgrgrgrgrrrr
i do not hear the noise when i'm in neutral and l rev the engine.... so its the tranny? better than the engine right?

Sounds like somethings wrong with the gears could be gear syncros low or no fluid something broken etc.

It could be either the motor or the transmission. Realistically it needs to be checked by someone like a mechanic who can hear the noise and go from there.

If you could get some kind of audio and/or video l might be able to help you more because the description is not really descriptive enough.

Rev it in neutral and see if you hear the noise. If the noise does not persist then it is coming from the transmission [seeing as you only hear it when it is in gear]

That sounds like u have a bad tranny. plain an simple

first thing l would do is pull the dust cover on the bell housing and check the clutch and fly wheel the best l could before taking the tranny out.

its more likley to be the transmission,if it low on fluid it could cause noise but it also could have a bad mainshaft bearing.
